Reviews“Hearts of Iron 4 wields complexity like a swift armor division during the blitzkrieg, allowing it to serve the idea of layered, cerebral, strategic warfare instead of letting it needlessly bog down the experience.”9/10 –“It captivates me because—imperfectly, impressionistically, and perhaps a little amorally—it lets me orchestrate the most titanic armed struggles in history, from the fussy economic details to the cut-and-thrust of mechanized warfare. There are other great strategic-level wargames out there. But I have never played anything like Hearts of Iron 4”8.8/10 –“For now, after many dozens of hours, I'm taking a break from Hearts of Iron 4. Not because I'm sick of it; quite the contrary, in fact.
What I need to do is some serious reading, some careful planning on what my vision for the United States should be in 1936. And when I've done that planning — when I've formulated my character sheet, as it were — I have the utmost confidence that Hearts of Iron 4 will be ready for me to play a role in world affairs.”8/10 –. So I recently became interested in the above named Grand Strategy game from the seemingly singular creator of grand strategy games, Paradox.Upon finishing the tutorial I was as well versed in 'Statecraft' as your typical year 11 student participating in Model UN hoping to nab some collage credit to make up or lackluster grades and hopefully start something with the smart, funny, beautiful Iranian girl who is also in the program. That is to say, none. So, will the Escapist please point me in the right direction? I know of some players on this sight, and I hope to get the collectors edition before the Steam sale ends today. Crikey, that's a tall order. There's a reason the manual weighs as much as a small car.My advice is - maybe do a basic tutorial or two to learn the barest of bare bones about the interface, then just start a game. You'll suck for a good few hours, so your goal isn't really to win or accomplish much. Just get used to the system, construct a few units, learn new tech, get a feel for trade and diplomacy, espionage, and politics.Pick someone outside of the war.
SnipThe problem I have with learning is that the demo only lets you play as either France, Poland, Germany, or England. Not very good countries to start out with and it plots you right at the beginning of the war, so I end up just ordering armies at the boarder to attack the french and polish forces who attacked me without any real way to tell what is effective. On the upside, I seem to win most of the engagements. It really annoys me that these developers can go on to make these super intricate games and then give you a virtually useless tutorial. I did't even get to do anything but click through text boxes! I did't even get to do anything but click through text boxes!Yeah, the demo is shockingly poor, and Paradox games are notorious for their lackluster tutorials.I'm afraid there's not much I can do about either of these problems, outside of my previous advice.:/. SnipI went ahead and bought the game from the steam sale for $18.This is your doing and you are going to take responsibility for this obvious Steam sale twitch purchase madness! Now the question is, should I lay the Motherland or Semper Fi x Pack?Bahahaha!
Another one reeled in! Little do they know, I'm paid by Paradox for every poor sucker I trick into buying their games! Soon, I'll be able to afford that bottle of lemonade I've always wanted!I'm reasonably certain that the game boots up with both packs loaded, if you have them. They're more about adding game mechanics than content, if you see what I mean, unlike Dies Irae: Gotterdammerung which adds content to Germany.Report back on your first session. I feel it is more suitible to pm rather than have a forum. SnipJust out of interest, is that LP ever gonna be revived? I was pumped for your final showdown with the Free British Forces and the United States.I may watch this thread for advice. HoI3 looked like a fantastic game for playing out alternate WWII outcomes that I would be absolutely useless at actually playing.
I sucked at Fate of the World when I tried playing that, too.Truth be told, I haven't tried playing HoI 3 since that damn crash. It pissed me off quite a lot. I might finish it if my game still works, although I'm also interested in a new LP project, such as Crusader Kings II. I never bother with tutorials in Paradox games.
It's best to learn with a hands-on approach. Sure you'll get a bloody nose, but it's more fun that way. Maybe start with a medium-sized nation at first.
Play around with the production sliders, experiment with intelligence and diplomacy. Don't worry too much about losing, but figuring out how the game actually works.Oh and keep an eye on your order of battle and command structure. These are important to ensuring unit organisation.I'm quite new myself to HOI 3, but a veteran at paradox games in general. Currently playing as the Soviet Union and getting my arse kicked by the axis. And to think I was doing so well until they declared war, having conquered most of Eastern Europe and the Balkans.Question for HOI3 veterans: So I own EU3 (and EU2), V2 and CK2 and I can play all of them to a satisfactory degree, how much more complicated is HOI3 than any of these (if at all)? I'm thinking of getting it and I'm wondering how long its going to take me to learn this thing. It's simpler in some areas, but more complex in others - for example it's less complex economically than Vicky 2 but more than CK2.
You're also experienced with Paradox games so you're probably smart enough to understand the game if you give it a chance. As is, I seem to constantly have a power problem. And why is it that no one ever mentions how the HQ and general military management works? That seems rather important to never even mention. It is, one thing I've found out is that you can't merge units into one death stack as you might in other Paradox games. Yeah, watch how your theatres are set up. That's pretty important. I'm afraid I don't know that much about how they work exactly only just having started hoi 3, but ensuring that each unit is under the correct theatre area is a start. It's pretty simple to detach a unit from one command and place it under another.Oh yeah and with the power, you need to make sure you have access to fuel sources and upgrade your coal/oil to fuel tech while you're at it.All of your units, whether land, naval or air, are part of a combined Command structure centered on the headquarters (HQ) units.
It is possible to leave units outside of the hierarchy but they will then fail to gain the bonuses for being within it (see Leader traits for a description of the bonuses). The organization of the command hierarchy is centered on land units, although air and naval units can be attached at any level.Division - composed of 1-5 brigades and commanded by a Major General (note that divisions of one brigade cannot have a general and to have 5 brigades requires researching a technology).Corps - composed of 1-5 divisions and commanded by a Lieutenant GeneralArmy - composed of 1-5 corps and commanded by a GeneralArmy Group - composed of 1-5 armies and commanded by a Field MarshalTheater - composed of 1-5 army groups and commanded by a Field Marshal.
Hi everyone,I am very sad to announce that my enthusiastic announcement regarding the next beta of MW mod was published too hastily, I was hoping that I can solve the severe lag problem of the mod by replacing the map but that has proven itself an illusion. The conclusion that I came to is that the game will lag even with the new map, while the map is one of the symptoms of the lag it is not the cause. Unfortunately no,Since the map is such a core concept of the game which affects pretty much EVERYTHING (except for techs maybe) I would be required to create two versions of the mod in order to have two maps available.Keeping this up is not worth the time or effort. So with Beta 7 you will only be playing on the new map which was downsized from 14,000 provinces to around 6000.However areas which have strategic importance or were historically battle zones will have a proper amount of provinces to allow tactical and strategic planning and fighting (plenty of provinces to fight in Russia).Right now my limit is to go as high as 10,000. Anything beyond that will probably cause the game to lag so the mod is open to additions in the future as far as the map is concerned.+2 votes.

Having chosen your country and start date, the game will start in paused mode. Speed control is very important, so familiarize yourself with the buttons near the date in the lower line of the bar at the top of the screen (I added an orange rectangle around them in the screenshot on the right, click to enlarge).
Don’t unpause just yet. I chose France in the Blitzkrieg Campaign, which will make for plenty of action right away and a great, quick, compact introduction. Before you even touch an army, there are probably a few icons at the top left, just under the main bar at the top of the screen. Mousing over them will give you a tool tip, holding there for a second longer will bring up details.
There is a lot to keep track of in Hearts of Iron III, but these icons will let you know the critical details, like when you are at war and with whom, have units to deploy, wasted research or industrial capacity, undersupplied units, and so on.These are our most pressing concerns, so we will deal with them first. Hearts of Iron III Alert Icons. The first icon you will usually see (other than the one that tells you you’re at war) is a little gavel and papers, and mousing over it tells us we could have more appropriate laws. This is normal whenever your country goes to war, at which point most countries will benefit from changing legal policies. Holding your mouse here will give specific changes you should probably make.Click on the Politics button in the bar at the top of the screen to bring up that view. You can dictate legal policy on seven topics.
Note that if the political side isn’t your thing, you can click the little arrows to the left and right of the word “normal' under the word politics, above the Politics window at the right corner, which will set Politics to AI control. Unlike some facets of the game though, Politics isn’t too bad in terms of micro-management, and the decisions involved are pretty important.
If you will use the AI, just skip ahead to the next page. First Steps to World Domination – Politics. The more restrictive your Civil and Press laws, the easier it is to maintain loyalty and root out spies, but you can only do this if political conditions in the country are right. Hitler has a lot more latitude than FDR, for instance. The same goes for conscription laws, with more aggressive settings getting you a larger manpower and officer recruitment pool.
Economic Laws and Industrial Policy let you set how war oriented your economy is, allowing you to make more money in peace time and crank out more units when needed in war time.Educational Policy lets you decide how much money to pour into developing leadership. Your leadership pool gets divided between Diplomats, Spies, Officers, and Researchers (we’ll come back to this when we discuss the tech tree), so unless you are going broke, it is money well spent.
Hearts Of Iron 3 Guide
Training Laws are a similar trade off: it takes longer to put troops in the field, but the experience bonus is generally worth it.This window also lets you see and change (changing depends on the country’s politics) your cabinet members. I usually don’t bother with this, but since I’m running France I got rid of a few people with collaborationist leanings and put in a few loyal sons of the Republic. HoI III’s Massive Tech Tree. The next icon at the top left will be a green gear.
This means you have research output you aren’t using. The tech tree in Hearts of Iron is broken up into twelve tabs. This view is also where you decide how to divide your leadership output. Personally I like to manage this myself, but the AI does a solid job. Actually, turning on the AI is a good way to get recommendations for technology and leadership distribution, then you can turn it off and tweak.Turn on the AI. You will need to unpause the game before it recommends anything, but we will be using that trick for a few other things, so let’s get those set up before we start the clock.
Managing Production in Hearts of Iron III. The next icon you are likely to see is a red factory, and mousing over it will announce you are wasting IC on Production. IC is industrial capacity, or how much factory space you have to put to good use. Open the production view.
Again, you can just drop this on the AI if you don’t want to tweak what units you get or if your units get resupplied before they are upgraded with new technology and vice versa. If you want to handle your own unit production, it isn’t that difficult, but there isn’t room for it here in the Quick Start Guide. Check out our. Handling Hearts of Iron III Diplomacy. Like the other views, there are arrows to hand over the Diplomatic cores to the AI. Handling this yourself is very involved, as diplomacy is how you get everything you need to survive that doesn’t happen to come from your own country. What does gms stand for.
While there are many interesting options you can delve into here, most of what you will end up doing amounts to approving nickel and dime offers and looking for trading partners to keep your armies fed and fuelled. The AI does a great job on the mundane stuff, and if you give it enough diplomats from the tech tree window, it will do some clever stuff on occasion. The AI had France exert diplomatic influence on the US until they joined the Allies, for instance. Espionage and Intelligence in HoI III. Like all the other views, the Intelligence one allows you to switch to AI control. Like the Diplomacy view, you will want to do this, at least for now.
There is a whole stack of stuff you can do in there, so it is worth getting into once you have the game basics down, but for now, the AI can handle informing you of what’s around the bend reasonably well. That’s it as far as either getting the AI to look after the background stuff for now or getting it to a point where we can look at our army. If you have any other warning icons, mouse over them. The war icon will be there all the time if you’re at war, and the wasted IC factory icon is hard to keep away for long. Just use the three numbers separated by slashes at the top in the bar to keep an eye out for it getting too big, the first number is how much IC you are wasting. The other icons you are likely to see at this point indicate units that aren’t getting supplies or are otherwise facing problems. We’ll cover supply line issues in another article.
For now, the next article gets into what we came for,.
